Levi's launched Engineered Jeans in Europe in 1999, with a 3D cut based on the natural leg twist of worn 501 jeans.

Twisted side seams, lowered and slanted back pockets, darts instead of a back yoke and hems cut shorter at the back set them apart from standard five-pocket jeans.

The line opened with small initial runs of about 2,000 pieces in August 1999 and 9,000 in November 1999.
